Everett Demolition in an Older Industrial City
Everett is the biggest city at the north end of our area, and demolition contractors here work in some of the oldest housing in the region. The city incorporated on May 4, 1893, became the Snohomish County seat in 1897, and counted 110,629 residents in the 2020 census. Everett has 19 recognized neighborhood associations, ranging from early 20th-century blocks near downtown to postwar and newer subdivisions in the south end.
Older houses, more unknowns
In Everett's older neighborhoods, a house may be well over a hundred years old, with layers of remodeling: plaster under drywall, several generations of flooring, an old chimney, a basement with a former coal or oil heating system. Before we price a teardown, we look for brick chimneys, buried oil tanks, basement depth and how close neighbors are. Older houses are also more likely to contain asbestos and lead paint, so the survey and any abatement come first.
Asbestos survey, notice and wait
Snohomish County is in the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency's area. The agency requires an AHERA-certified building inspector to survey the structure before demolition, a demolition notification for any structure with more than 120 square feet of roof area whether or not asbestos is found, and a 10-day wait after filing. If the survey finds asbestos, a certified abatement contractor removes it before demolition starts.
Permits and utility caps
The City of Everett issues demolition permits and provides water and sewer service to most of the city. Before demolition, the side sewer is capped and the water service is disconnected to the utility's standards. Power and gas are terminated by the utilities. Parts of south Everett are served by other districts, so we confirm the provider for your address. We call 811 before digging out foundations and driveways.
Industrial and commercial work
Everett has a large industrial base. Boeing's plant at Paine Field, enlarged in 1993, is the world's largest building by volume at 472 million cubic feet, and the U.S. Navy has operated Naval Station Everett since 1994. Around downtown, the waterfront and the commercial corridors, buildings change hands and tenants often. We handle commercial interior demolition and small commercial buildings, with materials sorted for recycling.
Hills, water and weather
Everett sits on a peninsula bounded by Port Gardner Bay and the Snohomish River, with hills between. Lots on the hillsides need slope-aware planning, and lots near the river flats can be soft in winter. Our erosion control plan matches the site: rocked entrance, silt fence, catch basin protection and covered stockpiles through the rainy season.
